El administrador del <strong>Canal de Panam\u00e1<\/strong>, Ricaurte V\u00e1squez, afirm\u00f3 que la presi\u00f3n sobre el recurso h\u00eddrico proviene principalmente del <strong>consumo urbano<\/strong> y no de las operaciones de la v\u00eda interoce\u00e1nica, la \u00fanica de agua dulce en el mundo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Consumo urbano y desaf\u00edo clim\u00e1tico<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Durante una conferencia organizada por Moody\u2019s en Ciudad de Panam\u00e1, V\u00e1squez recalc\u00f3 que la v\u00eda \u201cno utiliza m\u00e1s agua hoy que hace 20 a\u00f1os\u201d. En cambio, el crecimiento poblacional ha elevado la demanda de agua potable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Los lagos artificiales <strong>Gat\u00fan<\/strong> y <strong>Alhajuela<\/strong>, que abastecen al Canal desde 1913 y 1935 respectivamente, tambi\u00e9n proveen agua a m\u00e1s de la mitad de la poblaci\u00f3n paname\u00f1a. Sin embargo, las sequ\u00edas recientes han puesto en riesgo la operaci\u00f3n, obligando a reducir tr\u00e1nsitos entre 2023 y 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Proyecto del r\u00edo Indio<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>La administraci\u00f3n canalera impulsa la construcci\u00f3n de un <strong>tercer embalse<\/strong> en la cuenca del r\u00edo Indio, con una inversi\u00f3n estimada de <strong>US$1.500 millones<\/strong>. El proyecto enfrenta resistencia social, ya que comunidades afectadas presentaron un recurso ante la Corte Suprema.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>El embalse tendr\u00eda una superficie de <strong>4.600 hect\u00e1reas<\/strong>, equivalente al 8% de la cuenca, e incluir\u00eda un t\u00fanel de <strong>9 kil\u00f3metros<\/strong> que transportar\u00e1 agua por gravedad hacia el lago Gat\u00fan, evitando bombeo y consumo el\u00e9ctrico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aunque diez veces menor en superficie que Gat\u00fan, el lago de r\u00edo Indio podr\u00e1 almacenar un volumen de agua similar, aportando capacidad para <strong>11 a 15 tr\u00e1nsitos adicionales diarios<\/strong> en temporadas secas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Seguridad h\u00eddrica a 50 a\u00f1os<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Seg\u00fan V\u00e1squez, el proyecto es \u201ccr\u00edtico para todos los paname\u00f1os\u201d y una obligaci\u00f3n constitucional del Canal, que debe garantizar agua tanto para la navegaci\u00f3n como para las poblaciones de su entorno.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De acuerdo con John Langman, vicepresidente de la Oficina de Proyectos H\u00eddricos, el nuevo embalse asegurar\u00e1 la <strong>operaci\u00f3n sostenible del Canal<\/strong> y la seguridad h\u00eddrica del pa\u00eds durante los pr\u00f3ximos <strong>50 a\u00f1os<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Canal de Panam\u00e1 plantea tercer embalse para enfrentar crisis h\u00eddrica.
